Dear Parents and Carers,
We are excited to share what your child will be learning during the Autumn 2 term in Reception.
This term is packed with fun, creativity, and new discoveries!
Literacy
Our main text this term is All Aboard the London Bus by Patricia Toht.
We will use this story to inspire discussions, role play, and writing activities about transport and journeys.
Communication and Language
We will continue with Sounds Write phonics sessions to develop listening, speaking, and early reading skills.
This half term sees us learning the following new sounds: b, c, g, h, f, v, d, e, j, w, z, x, y
Mathematics
This term, we will be building strong foundations in number and shape through hands-on activities and games.
Our focus areas include:
- It’s Me 1, 2, 3
Children will learn to recognise, represent, and subitise (seeing how many without counting) numbers 1, 2, and 3. They will explore the concepts of one more and one less. - Circles and Triangles
We will identify and name circles and triangles, compare their features, and look for these shapes in our environment. Children will also use positional language to describe where objects are found. - 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
Building on earlier learning, children will represent numbers up to 5, practise subitising, and explore the composition of numbers (how numbers can be made in different ways). They will continue to work with one more and one less. - Shapes with Four Sides
Children will identify and name shapes with four sides, combine them to make new shapes, and hunt for these shapes in everyday surroundings.
Through these activities, children will develop confidence in counting, recognising numbers, and understanding shapes—all in a fun and practical way!
Understanding the World
Our topic is Transport: Past and Present. We will learn about different types of transport, road safety, and how people travel in different cultures (e.g., gondolas in Venice, tuk-tuks in Bangkok).
We will also celebrate special events such as:
Diwali
Christmas and Advent
The Nativity
Hannukah
Bonfire Night
Remembrance Day
Black History Month
Expressive Arts and Design
Children will enjoy creative activities such as:
- Biscuit making and decorating
- Art projects linked to transport and festive celebrations
- Nativity music
Physical Development
We will continue to develop gross and fine motor skills through PE, outdoor play, and “Funky Fingers” activities to strengthen hand muscles for writing.
We look forward to a fun and busy term ahead! Thank you for your continued support.
Kind regards,
Miss Stratton
