Autumn 2025
Curriculum Newsletter
Dear Parents and Carers,
We’ve had a fantastic start to the term in Year 4, and we’d love to share what your children have been learning across the curriculum. They have shown great enthusiasm, curiosity, and growing independence in their work—well done, Year 4!
Literacy
In Literacy, the children have been learning about explanation texts. They have explored how to use adverbial phrases, conjunctions, and technical vocabulary to explain ideas clearly. We have been practising planning, drafting, and improving our writing, with a particular focus on using full sentences and clear structure. After completion, we shall be learning how to write a narrative.
Maths – Place Value and Number
In Maths, our focus this term has been Place Value and Number. The children have been learning to read, write, compare, and order numbers up to 10,000. We have explored how each digit’s value changes depending on its place, used number lines to help estimate and round numbers, and practised partitioning in different ways.
Science – The Human Body and Classification of Living Things
In Science, the children have explored two exciting topics: The Human Body and Classification of Living Things. We began by learning about the major organs for the digestive system and their functions, the importance of a healthy diet and how to look after teeth. We then moved on to classifying animals based on their features, including mammals, reptiles, birds, amphibians, and fish.
History – Ancient Greece
In History, the children have been learning about Ancient Greece. They have explored life in Athens and Sparta, learnt about Greek gods and mythology, and discussed how Greek ideas have influenced modern life.
Geography – Spatial Sense
In Geography, our focus has been Spatial Sense. The children have been developing their map-reading skills, learning to interpret symbols, keys, and grid references.
Art – Light, Shade and Tone
In Art, the children have been learning how to use light, shade, and tone to add depth and realism to their drawings. They have practised using different pencil grades, explored how to create shadows and highlights, and experimented with shading techniques such as hatching and blending.
Design Technology – Designing and Making Juggling Balls
In DT, the children have been working on a hands-on project: designing and making their own juggling balls. They have explored differently designed juggling balls and have so far designed their own. They will use their designs when they produce their own.
Computing
The children have learned about online safety, how to recognise reliable information, and how to stay safe when using the internet.
Thank you for your continued support—we look forward to an exciting term in Year 4!
Warm regards,
Penguins Team
