What am I going to learn in Phonics?

The initial code

Children will learn to segment, blend and manipulate sounds in words.  They will learn that sounds can be represented by spellings with one letter and some spellings are written with a double consonant.

Children will learn some spellings are written with two different letters e.g. sh.

Year One

Children will learn that a sound can be represented by more than one spelling.  They will learn to segment and blend words which contain the target sounds e.g ae, ee.  Children will also learn the most common spellings which represent the target sound.

Children will learn to manipulate alternative sounds in and out of words.  They will learn a spelling can represent more than one sound and the most common sounds represented by the target spelling.

Children will learn to segment and spell polysyllabic words by segmenting them first into syllables and then each syllable, in turn, into sounds.  They will learn to blend to read words by first blending sounds into syllables, and then syllables, in turn into words.

Children will learn some words are made up of more than one syllable as well as the spelling of common syllables such as prefixes and suffixes.
