week beginning 8.09.25

Welcome to Canaries Class.

A fantastic start to Canaries Class. The children have settled in well, and we are implementing good routines for successful learning.

It has been great to get to know some of the children better and find out about their interests, hobbies and passions.

The children completed a backpack picture all about themselves and we shared our likes and dislikes.

Throughout this half term our learning goals are as follows:

Literacy - We will be focusing on a fantasy fiction novel called The Nowhere Emporium by Ross MacKenzie.

Lessons concentrate on the teaching of writing with a sharp focus on the craft and construction of sentences. Each sentence stacking lesson is organised into three learning chunks. Later in the unit, the children will continue the story, creating the next four plot points themselves.

This week we have focused on drama techniques, acting out how the crowd feel going into the mysterious building.

Maths – We will be learning place value representations and understanding numbers up to 1,000,000. The children will use concrete resources to help support their knowledge.

This week we have worked on numbers up to 10,000 and 100,000.

Science – We will be learning about the human body, from birth to old age. Each week we will look at the different stages of human development and compare this to that of other mammals.

This week we have looked at the start of life, including embryos, foetus and gestational periods.

History – We will be learning about Baghdad 900ce. This unit begins by looking at the Rise of Islam and the Islamic Empire. This series of lessons provides the context required to understand the significance of the building of Baghdad at this time.

Art – We will be learning about style in art, focusing on the Rococo style from the 1700s, Modernist style from the 1800s and Abstract art. The children will work towards creating their own abstract piece of art.

This week the children used smooth and rough techniques to create two different drawings of a pear. We collected pears from the outdoor learning area to study, to help with our final pieces.

Spanish – We will be learning the phonic sounds: ga, gi, gu, go, ge. Following on from this, we will be looking at presenting ourselves.

Computing – We will be recapping on Internet safety, and how to keep ourselves and others safe online. This will include S- safe, M- meet, A- accept, R - reliable, T-tell.

This week the children have created posters to describe what the SMART acronym means and steps we can use to keep safe when using the internet. We will also complete our tackling tables test on a Friday.

Spellings will be sent home on a Monday and the spelling test will take place on a Friday. Please encourage your child to practice at home and read three times a week.

Thank-you for your continued support.
