Another busy week in Owls class.
We teamed up with Magpies and Canaries to start our lessons on RSE. The focus this time was on feelings. The year 5 children focused on how emotions may feel like a rollercoaster at times due to the change in hormones. The year 6 focus was the feelings the pupils have towards themselves and how social media may have a negative impact on their body image.

This week, the class have worked really hard to finish their piece of abstract art, which they have completed to a really high standard. We have also been working really hard on the drafting of our final piece of writing for the literacy unit, asked around the video called The Piano. The children have written some wonderfully emotive pieces!

What a busy week we have had. A few highlights from the week have been working on our final piece of abstract art. Have a look at some of the photos. We have also been planning our final piece of writing for our literacy lessons and the children have done a wonderful job so far!
The children have also been making fantastic progress with their times tables after a reset after the holidays. Many children have moved up to the red cards and are learning some of the trickier ones. All children should spend some time learning these at home as they have access to Tackling Tables online at home too.
We will have a spelling test each Wednesday so please encourage your child to spend some time learning these over the week.

Welcome back to a new school year.
We're looking forward to an exciting and busy year as we head towards high school transitions and SATs for the year 6 pupils.
In Literacy this half term, we will be developing a story based on a short film called The Piano. We will be working on place value and addition and subtraction in maths. As part of our science curriculum, we will be learning about what happens to our body as we age, including puberty. As you can see from the images, our art lesson has been learning about Rococo design and moving into modernism and abstract art. The children will be creating their own piece of abstract art over the final two weeks. As a back to school refresh, we will be reminding ourselves how to keep safe online in our computing lessons and learning about identity theft and creating good passwords.

In history, we have been learning about Baghdad in 900 CE and how the city was designed and constructed.

What a busy few weeks we have had!
The class were fortunate enough to visit the Guildhall and see the work being carried out there to restore some of the history. They took part in a task to identify some old objects that were found under the floorboard. These included chicken bones, bottles, clothes pins, smoking pipes and shells. The children had lots of questions and were really well behaved.
The class also completed their "All about me" projects. The children were able to choose whatever material they wished to create something that represented a part of who they are.

We have now started our new DT unit of looking at global food. We have looked at the location that some food is grown and how these fit into a healthy diet. We have also tried some mango, which for some children was a new experience.

What a busy week back we have had.

The year 5 pupils have finished their art sculptures based on their own designs that represent a part of who they are. They will be coming home with the pupils this coming week.

Year 6 have begun their rehearsal for the leavers assembly at the end of the year.

This week, we have learnt more about World War 2 and in particular, the Holocaust. The children have been shocked at how unfair and brutal this situation was and also couldn't believe that it was true.

This coming week is the year 5 assessment week so we would like to encourage all pupils to be in school next week so they don't miss these.

On Wednesday, the class are also visiting the Guildhall - year 6 in the morning and year 5 at lunch time. They will get to look at the development happening and hear some of the stories about what they have discovered when removing the floor. Please make sure they are dressed appropriately as the weather has been a little unpredictable recently!

What a week Owls class have had!

The year 6 children have been sitting their KS2 SATs tests and they have completely blown us away! The resilience and determination they have shown has been admirable and they have all given 100% from start to finish.
The year 5 children have joined Canaries class and completed lots of outdoor learning activities around fractions, mental health and sports. They have had a busy week and have been incredibly encouraging and supportive of the year 6 pupils.

Welcome back to the summer term!
We have had a busy start to the term, beginning with building a wooden frame for our toys in DT. We will be returning to these after the year 6 pupils have completed their SATs.
The class have begun learning about World War 2 in our history lessons and are really enjoying learning about this topic. We have also begun learning about spreadsheets, plant reproduction, sculpture and Spanish words for our family members.

British Science Week

The class were given a challenge this week to create a creature out of paper without using any glue, tape or paper clips. The children really enjoyed creating their creature and thinking about the different features it had. The tricky part was making it without any joining materials. It was quite a challenge!

What a busy week Owls had!
Lots of learning in maths, literacy, geography, music, science, DT and music!
As it was World Book Day on Thursday, the class shared some stories with the younger children in reception class. It was a real joy seeing them all enjoy it.
The class has also begun to write a short rap in our music lessons. Although they were reluctant to start with, they all showed great focus and some were even brave enough to share what they had completed so far.

What a busy start to the half term we have had!

We started the week creating some William Morris inspired prints and the children learnt how to layer the colours.

The class then made some buzz wire toys using their knowledge of circuits.

We have started our new units for geography - North American landscape - and music - inspirational female musicians.

PE will remain on a Friday.

In science this week, the class conducted an experiment into what happens to a bulb when more voltage is added to a circuit. They were fascinated to see how bright the bulb could get and had to problem solve when making sure the circuit was complete each time an extra battery pack was added.

The class have also been very busy writing in preparation for our story draft next week and it has been lovely to hear their ideas.

Another busy few days in Owls class and the children have all worked really hard.
In science this week, the children have investigated what happens to a light bulb when more energy is added in the form of batteries. They discovered that the bulb gets brighter and we talked about bulb safety and what happens to the filament if we add to much power.
The year 6 children spent an afternoon learning about country dancing whilst the year 5 children had their RSE lesson about puberty and the changes that happen to their body. We hope they talked about this with you at home too.
We also began our history topic on Monday about the Suffragettes and the children were greatly interested.

Happy 2025! I hope you all had an enjoyable break.

This spring term begins a new adventure for me in Owls class so I thought I would introduce myself. I'm Mrs Blayney and have been teaching at Eastgate for 13 years. I have taught year 5 and 6 before I went on maternity to have my children and then went part time. I am very excited to be back teaching in year 5 and 6 and we have all had a great week to start the term off!
We started this term learning about William Morris in art, electricity in science and coding on computers. We have also started a new writing unit based on the book Kensuke's Kingdom. We started by doing some drama which you can see in the pictures.

PE will be on a Friday, so please send them wearing their PE kits.

Pictured above are our handwriting and presentation champion and our star of the week. Well done, keep up the fantastic work.

Today we attempted some DT. We used spaghetti and marshmallows to create some earthquake-proof buildings/towers. The children worked in teams of 5 or 6, mixing with children they don't always work with creating some weird and wonderful creations.
We will be testing these against Claire's table earthquake after lunch to see which group's creation will withstand the test.

The cleanup is going to be fun..... hehe!

We have also been looking at the differences between the Christmas Story we all know and the bible stories in Luke and Matthew.

Worked on some Classification in Science and produced 2 pieces of lovely work in one day.
