Climate Change Champions - 13.12.23
Published 15/12/23Canaries Class are West Norfolk Climate Champions!
In February this year, Eastgate Academy received an invitation to be part of an amazing competition that included schools from across the region. The competition was formed by a partnership between 8billionideas and the Borough of King’s Lynn and West Norfolk. It was called, Living For the Future.
Living For the Future was an ideas-based competition for primary schools in West Norfolk, which aimed to encourage creativity in every child, educate students on the issue of sustainability and challenged them to design ideas for greener cities in our world.
The competition was for Year 5 pupils and took place during Term 1 of the 2023/2024 academic year. Canaries Class were introduced to the competition through a virtual assembly delivered by 8billionideas in September and completed the six-week project before attending a virtual final.
Throughout the six-week project, Canaries Class learnt about the skills and qualities of being an entrepreneur, created Stone Age business ideas and built on their understanding of being ‘green’. In small teams, the children designed and created their own prototypes of green technologies that they felt would create a more sustainable King’s Lynn. They pitched their ideas to an in-school judging panel before the winning team was selected to represent our school in the virtual final.
The winning team were extremely proud to come 1st in the overall competition which included 21 schools. They were then presented with their West Norfolk Climate Champions certificates and reward vouchers by the Mayor of King’s Lynn and the local cabinet member for climate change and biodiversity.
When asked about their experiences of the competition, the children replied, “Canaries Class have loved completing the 'Living for the Future' project. We have enjoyed creating prototypes from our own ideas. It has been really fun. We have learnt the importance of teamwork and how we can use our own ideas to help the environment. We are all entrepreneurs!”
