Dear Parents and Carers,
We are excited to share the learning journey for Autumn 2. Below is an overview of what your child will be exploring this half term.
Literacy: Poetry: Firework Night by Andrew Collett
This term, children have been enjoying the vibrant poem Firework Night by Andrew Collett. They’ve had fun reading and performing list poems, exploring the magic of words through:
- Rhythm – creating a lively beat in their reading

- Rhyme – discovering patterns that make poems memorable
- Descriptive language – using vivid words to bring fireworks to life
Why not ask your child to share their favourite line or create their own firework poem at home? It’s a great way to celebrate creativity and language together!
Mathematics: Addition and Subtraction within 10
This term, we are building strong foundations in number work! Children are:
- Exploring part-whole models to understand how numbers fit together
- Creating addition and subtraction sentences using fact families
- Learning their number bonds to 10 for quick mental maths
- Using a number line to add and subtract with confidence
You can support at home by asking your child to show you different ways to make 10 or by playing simple number games together!
Geography: Exploring Maps and Navigation
This term, children are learning key skills to understand the world around them. They will look at aerial views, use a compass to understand directions, and read maps with symbols and keys to develop confidence in navigation and spatial awareness.
Science: Seasons and Weather
This term, children are becoming young meteorologists! They will learn about the four seasons
and how weather changes throughout the year, explore weather tools to record observations, and
identify different types of clouds and what they tell us about the weather. Why not check the sky
together at home and see if your child can name the clouds they spot?
Religious Education: Gifts and Giving
This term, children are exploring traditions from around the world. They will learn about Christmas traditions and the Christmas Story, discover how Eid al-Fitr is celebrated, and explore festivals from different faiths to appreciate diversity and respect for others.
Design & Technology: Moving Pictures
This term, children are getting creative with design and technology! They will build sliders, levers, and pivots to explore how movement works, create wheel mechanisms to make models move, and develop problem-solving skills while understanding how everyday objects function.
Thank you for your continued support. We look forward to an exciting term of learning!
Kind regards,
Mrs MacMillan
