Owls class newsletter - Autumn Term 2
Welcome back to Autumn term 2 and we hope you managed to enjoy some family time and a rest during half term after a long first half. The children settled will into Owls class and have all worked hard to make progress in the first seven weeks – myself and Miss Pateman are very proud of what they have achieved already. It was nice to meet many of you at parents evening and I look forward to meeting more of you over the school year.
In Literacy this half term, we are going to be following The Write stuff unit called Postcards from Prison where the children will be writing in role as a villain from a fairy tale. The focus will be on creating a tone within their writing, showing more about their character based on the how they write.
The children are encouraged to read at home each evening as part of their homework to experience a wide range of genres. The children will change their books each Friday during our library slot.
As part of our spelling lessons, the children will bring home a list of words each week to learn, ready to be tested each Wednesday. Please encourage them to learn these.
In maths, we will be consolidating our written methods for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and will then move to fractions, using White Rose Maths. There is also a section on this website for parents to support any home learning.

Year 5 maths:
Year 6 maths:
As part of our Science lessons, the children will be learning how to group materials based on their properties. Through different experiments, we will be looking at how some materials dissolve in liquids and learning that some materials are better thermal insulators than others. We will also be looking at how mixtures can be separated by through the process of filtering, sieving and evaporating.
Our unit in geography is called spatial sense and the children will be using maps and atlases to identify lines of longitude and latitude, prime meridian and time zones. We will also be looking at coordinates and compass directions in order to build their knowledge of the world.
As part of our music lessons, the children will be listening to and appraising rock music, learning about the evolution of rock music from The Beatles onwards. We will be focusing on the song ‘Livin’ on a Prayer’ by Bon Jovi and taking part in musical games based on pitch, rhythm and pulse.
In our RE lessons, we will be learning about the true meaning of Christmas for Christians. They will consider how their definition of Christmas may be different to Christians and they will consider if this has changed over time. The children will create artwork based on Christmas key words, discuss Christian acts of love at Christmas, compare Christian Christmas cards to cards they may send and study the lyrics to Away in a Manger.
The class will be swimming as part of their PE lessons on a Wednesday. Please ensure they have their kit, that long hair is tied up and earrings are removed.
