Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome to Autumn 2 of Year 6!
We are excited to continue with our Autumn term with Magpies as we settle into Year 6 life and help children prepare for their SATs and final year at Eastgate Academy. We have all enjoyed working with Magpies from the start of the school year and look forward to what is to come. Since September, we have worked on a variety of skills and explored a range of fascinating topics from World War 1 to learning how to speak about our pets in Spanish. Below is an overview of what we will be covering across the curriculum in the second half of Autumn Term.
Our topics for this half term are:
Maths – In Maths this half term we will be finishing our unit on addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. This will include refining our knowledge of division and becoming more familiar with multi-step problems and the order of operations. We will then move on to our next unit of fractions. Children will learn about equivalent fractions, how to compare and order them and adding and subtracting fractions.
Literacy – We have just finished our independent write on the narrative of The Paperman. For Autumn 2 we have started looking at Charles Dickens’ ‘A Christmas Carol’. This half term children will be building their knowledge on persuasive techniques in writing for the result of writing a persuasive letter to Mr Scrooge.
Science – Science in Autumn 2 is all about the classification of living things. Children will learn about the five kingdoms of living things, exploring how scientists sort living things into different groups. They will also learn about plant and animal cells, taxonomy, vertebrates and invertebrates.
Geography – Our Y6 Geography is continuing with spatial sense that children will have learned about in previous years. This half term, our focus will be on latitude and longitude, the Arctic and Antarctic Circles, time zones and maps of the world.
RE – Our topic in RE this term is the Christmas Story. Children will be learning about ‘The Nativity’ story, different Christmas customs, advent celebrations and different accounts of the Nativity.
DT – In DT we are exploring earthquake proof structures. We will learn about earthquakes and how they affect structures, test different structures and design and create a model of an earthquake proof structure.
PE – The PE day for Magpies is now Fridays. Please ensure children come in the correct PE kit. Their focus this half term is on gymnastics.
Homework – Children are expected to practice their spellings each week for a spelling test every Monday. Spellings will be given on Mondays for a test that following week. Please encourage children to read frequently at home. Reading with your children and hearing them read is important for their development. Children will also receive a short piece of Maths and SPaG/reading homework each Friday with a week to complete and hand in on the following Friday. Children should also practice their times tables at home; this can be done through Tackling Tables.
Thank you for your continued support. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.
Best wishes,
Miss Roche, Miss Garrod and Mrs Satkauskiene.
