Puffins have enjoyed a great week of learning. Here are some of our highlights:

Star of the Week

Literacy

This week we wrote our own list poems based on our class book and performed them to the class.

Maths

We have been practising our subtraction skills by counting back on a number-line.

Science

We conducted an experiment using cress seeds.We put them in different places with and without water, and made a prediction of which one we thought would grow the best.

History

We held our own Parliament and debated the things we could do with the budget. We presented our arguments and the Prime Minister had the final say.

Music

We used the glockenspiels to write our own tunes and performed them to the class.

 

Art

We planned and designed our own swingboat ride for the fairground.

Puffins have had a super week of learning this week. Here are some of our highlights:

Literacy

We have continued to explore our book 'The Secret Sky Garden'. This week we wrote our own persuasive leaflets to stop people from littering.

Maths

We have been practising our subtraction skills by jumping back on a number line.

Music

This week we practised playing a song on our glockenspiels.

History

We learnt how King James refused to obey Parliaments laws and about the promise of powers that William and Mary granted Parliament in order to be crowned the new King and Queen. 

DT

We investigated the push and pull forces and thought about what forces a swingboat fairground ride might need.

Week starting 25th April

Welcome back! Puffins have had a super start to the Summer term. Here are some of our highlights:

Star of the day

Phonics Stars

Literacy

We have started new book, 'The Secret Sky Garden'. We have thought about all the littering that spoilt the garden and researched some facts about littering.

Maths

We have been using the part-whole model to find related addition and subtraction facts.

History

We are starting a new topic about parliament and Prime Ministers. We thought of questions that we would like to find the answers to.

Science

We are starting a new topic about plants and growing. We thought of all the things we would like to learn and put our questions on our working wall. We also investigated the different parts of a plant during continuous provision. 

Art

We thought about fairgrounds and drew our favourite fairground ride. In outdoor learning, we also started to make some sculptures.

Extras

On Friday we went to Pensthorpe Park. We did lots of activities including finding out about plants to help with our science topic. We had a fabulous time!

Week starting 28th March

Puffins have had a fabulous last week of term. Here are some of our highlights.

Literacy

We continued exploring the different poems in our class book. This week we wrote our own poems and performed them to the class.

Maths

We created addition and subtraction related number sentences using the part-whole model.

Science 

We successfully achieved 100 leaves on our tree from all our hard recycling work. We were able to plant a real tree in the field!

 

 

Geography

We thought about all the things we had learnt about the UK and wrote them in our books. We also made some Union Jacks using collage.

RE

We thought about all the ways Christians celebrate Easter.

DT

We used our painting skills to decorate some Easter Eggs.

Hello, It has been an exciting week in Puffins class. Here are some of our highlights:

Star of the week

Phonics Stars

 

Literacy

We have learnt the poem 'Ice' this week. We listened to some cracking ice and wrote our own poems using onomatopoeia. Then we performed our poems to the class.

Maths

We have continued to practise our subtraction skills this week.

Science

This week we investigated how objects are recycled. We drew some diagrams of our findings in our books.

 

RE

We continued with the Easter story and thought about how Jesus' disciples felt when he died. We acted our ideas.

Geography

This week we continued our exploration of the UK by returning to England. We looked at some different places in England and compared their features.

Music

We practised finding the rhythm and playing our instruments along with the music.

DT

This week we were able to practise our cooking skills and make the breakfast pots we designed last week.

On Monday we had our Easter Disco!

 

We also had CBeebies in this week to screen test us for their show.

Week starting 14th March

Hello, Puffins have enjoyed another busy week of learning. Here are some of our highlights:

Star of the week

Literacy

This week we have studied another new poem. We thought of some group performance ideas and performed to the class. Then we wrote our own lines to add to the poem.

 

Maths

We have continued building on our knowledge of subtraction.

Science

This week, we explored the 3 main types of pollution (land, air and water). We poured some ink in a tub of water to recreate water pollution. We also went on a litter pick in our playground to help lessen the land pollution. 

Geography

This week we explored Northern Ireland and the Irish culture. We created some posters about Ireland using the information we found out. We even had the opportunity to have a go at some Irish dancing!

Art and DT

We continued exploring breakfast foods. This week we tried some different flavoured yoghurts and designed our own breakfast pots. We will make these next week.

Extras

We have been doing some extra science activities around the subject of growth to celebrate Science Week. 

We have been planting vegetables in our outside area. We have also been on a worm identification hunt. We put the worms back to live in the soil of the vegetables we planted because they help the soil.

Week starting 7th March

Puffins have enjoyed another fabulous week of learning. Here are some of the things we have been doing:

Star of the Week

Literacy

We have continued exploring the poems in our class book. This week we studied the poem 'Busy Day'. We planned actions for it and performed it to our class.

Maths

This week we have been learning how to subtract. We learnt how to draw a diagram to help us find the answer.

Science

We investigated deforestation and learnt about logging. We acted being trees that were cut down. We thought about why people cut down trees and why we need them. We came up with some ideas how to use fewer trees.

 

 

 

RE

We have been learning about Easter. This week we found out about Good Friday and what the cross represents for Christians. We acted Jesus being led away and put on the cross. Then we tried some hot cross buns. 

 

Music

In Music this week we practised using the glockenspiels. We tried to follow the tune and play the notes in time to the music.

Geography

We have been learning about Scotland.

 

 

DT

We have planned and made our own fruit kebabs.

Extras

We had a special breakfast of waffles and pancakes and a non-uniform day because of our fabulous attendance.

Hello, Puffins have been doing some super learning this week. Here are some of our highlights:

Star of the week

Phonics stars

Literacy

We have continued exploring the poems in our new book. This week we listened to a new poem 'Dino's Dinner' and thought of ways to illustrate it in groups. Then we thought of our own favourite foods. We drew our ideas and discussed describing words we could use. Finally, we thought of our own food poems.

 

Maths

This week we have been using our addition skills to help us work out some mathematical word problems.

 

Science

We have been investigating different materials and finding out if they are manufactured or natural. We put our findings in a table.

 

RE

We found out what Maundy Thursday means. We acted out the story and made some posters in our groups to show the class.

Geography

We explored Scotland this week. We found out about the Highland Games, the Loch Ness Monster and other Scottish traditions.

Design and Technology

This week we tasted lots of different foods that are used for breakfasts. Then we designed our own healthy breakfast plate.

Extras

This week we celebrated World Book Day at school. Our costumes were amazing!!!

Week starting 21st February

Puffins returned to school full of enthusiasm and energy. Here are some of the things we have been doing:

Star of the week

Phonics Stars

Literacy

We have begun our new book 'The Puffin fantastic book of first poems'. This week we learnt the poem 'Spaghetti! Spaghetti!'. We learnt some verses and performed them to the class then we thought of our own verse to add to the poem.

 

Maths

We have been learning different ways to find number bonds to 10. We have used some of the methods we learnt last half-term.

Science

We have been learning about the environment and how we can help. We have begun collecting recycling to use for our junk modelling in continuous provision. After our science learning time, we asked Mrs Mac if we could plant a tree. Mrs Mac said yes! Louise has painted a tree on our cupboard door and year 2 have cut out 100 leaves for us. Each time we bring in recycling, we can add a leaf. When we have 100 leaves we can plant a tree. Mrs Healy has a tree for us and Miss Snow has given us somewhere to plant it!

 

RE

This half-term we are learning the Easter story. This week we learnt about Palm Sunday. We acted out Jesus and the Donkey being greeted by the crowd. Then we recreated the scene in our books.

Geography

We have been finding out which 4 countries make up the United Kingdom. We learned what the Union Jack stands for and explored the different parts of it. Then we drew the flag in our books.

DT

We found out about the different breakfast foods people like to have and investigated whether they come from plants or animals.

Week starting 7th February

It has been a very busy last week of half-term. Here is some of our highlights:

Star of the week

Phonics stars

Literacy

This week we have been learning about instructions. We watched a video and followed the instructions to make a bird feeder. We hung them up in our outside area. Then we wrote our own instructions for others to follow.

 

Maths

We have continued to explore how we can use number lines. We have been using number lines to find the missing number in our number sentences.

Science

This week we gave weather forecasts to the class using weather symbols.

Computing

It was Internet safety day on Tuesday. We learnt about how to keep safe online and then made some posters to help other children.

Extras

On Friday we had a fund-raising day. We wore something red and brought in some food for the food bank.

Puffins have had another exciting week of learning. Here are some of the things we have done.

Star of the week

 

Literacy

This week we have been writing our own poems about helping the world. We thought of actions for them and performed them to the class.

 

Maths

We have been learning how to add using number lines.

Science

This week we went outside to look at the clouds. We investigated the 3 different types of clouds and their differences.

 

 

History

We learnt about King Charles I and how he didn't listen to Parliament. He sent his people to war and took all their money in tax. Eventually he was captured and killed. We acted out the story and created a storyboard of it in our books.

 

Art

We thought about all the things penguins might need and designed our own penguin houses. Then we made them using junk modelling.

This week the children worked together to produce their own zig zag books about how to help the world.

 

 

Maths

We continued learning about different ways to write addition number sentences.

Science

We looked at how much rain had been collected in the rain gauges we made, and we learnt how to show the data of the rainfall.

History

This week we found out about King Henry III and how he became king. We learnt what a parliament is and acted out being a parliament. We made some crowns during our continuous provision.

Art

We have continued to explore the features of architecture. This week we looked at some gargoyles, then we designed and made our own.

Hello everyone, Puffins have been very busy this week. Here are some of the things we have been doing.

Literacy

This week we have looked at some examples of conservation posters and chosen the feature we like the best. Then we had a go at designing and creating our own conservation posters.

Maths

We have been using 10 frames to help us with addition number sentences. We have also been investigating the different ways a number sentence can be written.

Science

We have been learning about the different ways we can measure the weather. We made our own rain gauges to measure rainfall.

History

We have continued to learn about King John and the Magna Carta. 

Art

We looked at the differences between the windows in St Paul's Cathedral and Westminster Abbey. We then made our own rose windows.

Extra's

We put some coins on the logo for our fund-raising event.

Hello, here is our week of learning.

Literacy

We have continued with our new book and researched lots of our own information about how to help the environment. We gave a presentation to the class of our findings.

Maths 

We have been exploring 5 and 10 frames and converting them to part-whole models. We have also been practising our addition skills during continuous provision.

Science

We have been learning about the different seasons and the changes in weather.

History

We have found out about King John and the Magna Carta. We acted out King John taking money in tax from the farmers and the Barons who told him off. 

In continuous provision we made some crowns and used the play money to take taxes from each other.

Art

Today we did some line drawings of Westminster Abbey, we played close attention to all the details.

Welcome back. We hope you had a lovely break. The children have had a very busy start to the term.

Literacy

We have begun our new book '10 things I can do to help the world'.

 

Maths

We reviewed our learning from last term (part-whole models) and began looking at different ways to show number sentences.

 

History

Our new topic is 'Kings and Queens'

We watched the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II and learnt what a coronation ceremony is and all the special things the King or Queen has to wear or hold when they are crowned. 

Art

Our new topic is 'Architecture'. We looked at some famous buildings and had a go at doing some line drawings of St Paul's Cathedral.

The children have had a very exciting last week of term!

Literacy

We thought about where Pattan lived and the things he might need, and we designed a class Christmas list for him. Next, we did our own Christmas lists in our books of all the things we would like to find under the tree.

Maths

We continued to practise our addition skills with the part-whole model.

Science and Geography

We thought about all the things we had learnt this half term and completed our end of unit quizzes.

Art

We used our painting skills to paint some Christmas pictures

Extras

We had our school disco on Monday evening.

It was our carol service on Wednesday and we were fabulous!

Thursday - We went to the school pantomime and had our school party in the afternoon.

Friday - We won some attendance awards in the special assembly. We were able to bring in our own games to play.

Wow! An extremely busy week for Puffins this week. Here are some of the things we have been learning.

Literacy

We have been looking at some poems and as a class we all wrote a poem about a pumpkin. We have also been practising our sentence writing and our reading skills.

Maths

We have continued learning about the part-whole model and how we use it for addition. We are starting to feel confident with this now and some of us have done our own in continuous provision time.

Science

We used the scientific words we have learnt to describe the features of an animal.

Art

We have been making Christmas cards in class.

Extras

This week we have spent lots of time practising our Nativity. We performed to the school and to parents.

Hello, another very exciting week! Here are some of the things we have been doing.

Literacy

We have been thinking of all the different things Pattan could do with the pumpkin and writing our own sentences. We finished the week by learning some pumpkin poems and performing them to the class.

Maths

We have learnt about the part-whole model and practising our addition skills. We have also practised using our addition skills in continuous provision.

Science

We have been thinking about our pets and the things they need to live. 

Geography

We have been finding out how to use a compass. We drew our own compasses on the playground and had a go at giving each other directions.

 

Extras

We made our own decorations for the Christmas tree in outdoor learning.

Hello everybody, Puffins have had a fabulous week of learning. Here are some of our highlights.

Literacy

We have been continuing with our book Pattan's Pumkin and using the examples in it to help us write sentences that describe and compare.

Maths

We have been learning about the part-model and had a go at doing some of our own.

Science

We have found out about omnivores, herbivores and carnivores. We made some food plates for each type of animal.

Geography

We have learnt about 'location' and drawn some signpost maps to show how near or far away from us things in our classroom are.

Art

We have found out about the artist Miro, who liked to use dark lines, shapes, stars and primary colours in his work. We looked at some of his pictures and then had a go at our own.

Extras

We have been doing lots of singing practise for the nativity.

Puffins have enjoyed their learning this week. Here are some of the things we have been doing.

Literacy

We have continued to read our book, 'Pattan's Pumpkin'. This week we have been focusing on what the different characters might be thinking and learning how to use thought bubbles to show thoughts. We also worked in groups to create some 'protect the pumpkin' posters which we showed to the class.

Maths

We have practised our number line skills. We are learning how to add using jumps on a number line.

Science

We have found out about the different animal groups and what features each animal has. We have made some animal group posters by sorting out animals into the correct groups.

Art

We have been exploring the different materials that we can make lines with and used white paint on black paper to experiment with the different kinds of lines we could make.

Geography

This week we have been looking at Kings Lynn on Google Maps. We then did our own map of our journey to school in the morning.

We have been practising our road safety in outdoor learning this week.

Puffins have had another busy week. Here are some of the things we have been doing.

Literacy

We have continued reading our class book 'Pattan's Pumpkin'. This week we have been concentrating on using descriptive language and sounding out our words independently. We created a class character profile for Pattan and then chose our own character from the book to create a character profile for in our work books. We practised using our imaginations and closed our eyes whilst part of the story was read. Next we drew the things we could see in our imaginations on whiteboards and used independent sounding out to label them. We have also been practising our phonics in continuous provision.

Maths

We have continued learning about number lines. We have used number lines to find the greatest and smallest numbers. We then moved on to finding 1 more and 1 less by using jumps on the number line.

Science

We have been learning about all the different types of animals and thinking about features of animals. We drew our favourite animal in our books and had a go at writing down the features of our animal. We have also been thinking about where the animals might live and in continuous provision, we matched the animals we knew to their habitats.

 

Art

We have been learning about line. This week we followed instructions from a video on how to draw a penguin using lines. Then we drew a park using different lines.

Geography

We have been learning about 'aerial view'. We tried to recognise some objects drawn using an aerial view. Then we drew some objects ourselves by looking at them from above.

It is the end of a very busy first week back for Puffins. Here are some of the things we have been doing.

Literacy

We have a new book 'Pattan's Pumpkin which is set in India. We have enjoyed learning the story and finding out about India and the Sahyardri Mountains where the story is set.

Maths

We have been learning about ordering and sequencing numbers. On our outdoor learning day, we took some 100 squares and some chalk outside and practised writing our numbers. We have also begun looking at how to draw a number line and practised our own in our maths books.

Science - Our new topic is 'animals and their needs'. We thought a lot about the different animals we know and shared all our ideas. 

Art - We have been finding out about 'line' and how we can use lines to make pictures.

Geography - We looked at different maps and then attempted to draw a map of the school on our whiteboards.

Extra's - It was Day of the Dead this week at school. We had lots of fun learning about this. We had a fabulous parade in our costumes! We went outside and collected some sticks to make skeletons with.

Last week of the half-term! Puffins have had a very exciting week this week. 

Literacy

We have arrived at Cinderella's castle in our book 'The Jolly Postman'. We began the week by choosing our favourite character from the story and creating a character profile in our books. Then we retold the story by working in groups to create our own story mountains. Finally, we chose the part of the story we liked the best and practised our writing skills by reproducing it in our books.

Maths

In maths this week we have been learning about ordering numbers from smallest to biggest and biggest to smallest. We began by making ourselves a number line out of order and challenging the class to put us in the right place. Then we practised fixing some mixed up numbers on our whiteboards. Finally, we completed the number ordering work in our maths books. 

Science-It is our last week of learning about the human body and the senses. We discussed all the things we have learned and remembered. 

History-We have finished learning about the past and the present. We discussed all the things we know about history and completed a quiz.

RE-We talked about all the different ways we can care for others and completed the 'what I have learned' section in our books.

Extras

We started the week with our Halloween disco. We had a fantastic time!

It's been a busy week of learning for Puffins. Here are some of the things we have been doing.

Literacy

We have reached the Giants house in our book 'The Jolly Postman'. We began the week with a little role-play between the Giant and the postman. Then we held a debate to decide whether the Giant should forgive Jack. We finished by writing our own replies to Jack's postcard. We also made some postcards of our own in continuous provision.

 

Maths

We have continued to learn about the crocodile and equals symbols. We are becoming very confident at using these correctly.

History

We have learnt about how people used to travel before there were cars and looked at some old pictures of Kings Lynn with people using horses and carriages to get around.

Science

We learnt about the life of Helen Keller and how she managed to learn to read and write and help others after her illness left her blind and deaf.

DT

We have made our own 'levers' to move Jack along the beanstalk.

RE

We have learnt about the Islamic story 'Be My Guest' and thought about how sometimes we may need to sacrifice something to help others.

Another exciting week of learning for Puffins.

Literacy

We have been continuing with our Jolly Postman book. This week we have been learning how to create story mountains and story maps. We have also written our own porridge recipes in continuous provision.

Maths

We have been finding out about 'greater than' and 'smaller than'. We have learnt the crocodile mouth symbol and the equals symbol. In continuous provision, we made some porridge to help us remember the language of more and less.

Science

We have continued exploring our senses in Science. This week we investigated smell and taste.

RE

We have learned the story of the Good Samaritan and thought about how important it is to be kind.

DT

We have made some sliders (moving pictures in a book)

History

We put on our archaeologist hats and went digging in the outdoor learning area to see what we could find.

Puffins have been very busy this week. Here are some of the things we have been learning about:

Literacy

We have visited the Witches house in our book 'The Jolly Postman' and we have thought about what it would be like to be a witch. We have created a character profile for the witch, we have thought of questions for the witch and sat in the 'hot' seat as the witch. We have also written some spells during continuous provision time.

Maths 

We have continued learning about more and less. We have been comparing groups and thinking about how to make more or less. We have been making potions for the witch in our continuous provision and discussing whether we need more or less. We have been thinking about weight and capacity.

Science

This week, we have been investigating sound and talking about how we hear sound. We went on a listening walk around the school to see what we could find. In continuous provision we used blindfolds to see if we could identify objects just by sound.

History: We have been finding out what an archaeologist does and investigated the findings from  the Must Farm site.

DT

We have looked at how a book uses moving parts and discussed what we like/dislike about the product.

RE

We found out about the celebration of Raksha Bandhan and designed our own Rakhi.

Other

We had our first Library visit this week and chose a library book to take home.

Outdoor learning with Miss Snow was fabulous. We did some bean art this week.

Puffins have had another good week this week. Here are some of the things we have been doing.

Literacy: We have been continuing to follow the adventures of 'The Jolly Postman'.

Maths: We have been learning about 'one more and one less' and using our counting skills to find the answers.

Science: We have investigated the different parts of the eye.

History: We have been creating our own family trees.

RE: We have been thinking about all the people that care for us and the people/pets that we help care for.

Art: We have tried to recreate the William Hogarth Painting, 'The Graham Children', by painting a section each.

Literacy - We have been getting to know our new book, 'The Jolly Postman'.

We have been learning how to write a letter and writing our own letters for the postman to post.

Maths - We have been exploring our numbers to 10, counting backwards and forwards and also learning how to write the numbers to 10 as words and numerals.

Science - We have been finding out about the different parts of the body. We have investigated what happens to our body when we exercise.

History - We have been learning what 'history' means and discussing the difference between past and present.

RE - We have been thinking about how to care for others.

Art - We have looked at the paintings of William Hogarth and drawn our own versions of them.

We have also painted a self-portrait of our faces.

Other: We have also had our outdoor learning this week, and we enjoyed it very much even though it rained.
